We at FoodRescueDude find great fulfillment in the world of Food Rescue, and hope you do too...
Randy Rosens, aka "the food rescue dude", has a long history of involvement in grassroots, community-based Food Rescue.
FoodRescueDude was started to share his experience with others who are interested in getting involved in Food Rescue,
and perhaps even forming their own Food Rescue Operation! For more information see The FoodRescueDude Story, and
The FoodRescueDude Team.
FoodRescueDude Vision and Mission
FoodRescueDude's vision is that anyone with a desire to get involved in grassroots Food Rescue, and/or form a small, volunteer-based Food Rescue Operation
in their community, can do so with minimal barriers (e.g. cost, bureaucracy, research).
Our mission is to provide tools, knowledge, and inspiration
to help support these "Food Rescue enthusiasts", and foster a Community where they can learn and share information and experiences.
FoodRescueDude Values:

Randy Rosens began his involvement with Food Rescue nearly two decades ago, when he started a one-man Food Rescue Operation that ultimately grew into a
nationally recognized nonprofit that rescues millions of pounds of food a year. For more info on Randy and his Food Rescue background
see About "the food rescue dude".
While seeing the small Food Rescue Operation he created evolve into a large, hugely impactful, formal non-profit organization was very fulfilling, Randy
yearned to return to his roots and passion of small, grassroots Food Rescue, and to help others to get involved
in simple, community-based Food Rescue and even to start their own Food Recue Operations. This desire to "replicate" his Food Rescue experience/knowledge
became a regular topic of conversation with his brother Mark, and they decided to
work together and try to create an online service to help people engage in small grassroots Food Rescue -- the idea of "FoodRescueDude" was born!
Randy had the Food Rescue knowledge, experience, and passion. Mark, whose career was in corporate IT, had the business, technology, and formal writing
expertise to turn this information into accessible services -- websites, publications, discussion groups, etc. It was a natural partnership.
Mark and Randy collaborated to start putting the building blocks in place. A great deal of time, discussion, and thought went into determining what the various FoodRescueDude
services would be (e.g. the Website, Guide, Online Community, Food Rescue Encyclopedia). While Mark worked on identifying, coding, and implementing the technical
solutions for running FoodRescueDude, Randy and fellow Food Rescue expert volunteer Pamela Browning began capturing a treasure trove of Food Rescue
knowledge that existed mainly in their heads. Mark interviewed Randy extensively to further unearth nuggets of Food Rescue wisdom, and together the brothers refined the information they gathered into the
Guide to Small Grassroots Food Rescue, the Food Rescue Encyclopedia, and the other content that became FoodRescueDude. There were many
unexpected bumps along the way, but brotherly love and perseverence prevailed, and FoodRescueDude became a reality!
The FoodRescueDude Team feels passionately about Food Rescue, and hopes that our efforts can make a difference, however small, in helping others to share that passion
and get engaged in saving food, preventing environmental damage, and feeding their neighbors in need. If FoodRescueDude is able to do that, it was all worth it!
Randy:
Randy Rosens founded and operates FoodRescueDude, as its spiritual leader and primary source of Food Rescue knowledge. His role includes providing information to those
interested in grassroots Food Rescue, in the form of the Food Rescue Guide and Encyclopedia, Online Community posts and interaction, and in some cases direct assistance on
community members' projects. For more information on Randy see About "the food rescue dude" and The FoodRescueDude Story.
Mark:
Randy's brother, whose background is in corporate IT, designed and created the platforms Randy uses to run FoodRescueDude (e.g. the website, Online Community Facebook group,
and publishing mechanisms), and assists Randy in managing them. He also provided his corporate writing experience in crafting Randy's Food Rescue knowledge and experience
into formal publications such as the Food Rescue Guide and Encyclopedia.
Pamela:
Pamela Browning works alongside Randy as a Food Rescue volunteer. Pamela assisted Randy in capturing his knowledge, supplemented with her own, as the basis for creating the
Food Rescue Guide and Encyclopedia, and also took part in their proofreading/refinement.
Marty:
Marty Erhart is also a Food Rescue enthusiast, and has decades of experience in advertising art. Marty lent his talent to the the creation of the Food Rescue Guide, by providing
artistic guidance and contributing/editing much of the imagery.
Hi, I'm Randy Rosens, and I have a passion for Food Rescue.
In 2004, I was volunteering at a high-end fundraiser at an art museum in Austin, Texas. Folks paid a lot of money to
attend the event, which included an abundance of expensive food. There was a goodly amount left over. A woman who
supported a domestic violence shelter in town was a friend of mine. I called her and asked if they would like these
fine leftover meals -- her response was an emphatic "Yes, please!" Rescuing quality surplus food and donating it to
folks experiencing food insecurity was not commonplace at the time. I assured the caterer that her marvelous cuisine
would be handled safely and go to people who both needed and would appreciate it. The direct transfer was made and the
recipients were delighted.
I saw the magic in this transaction:
Good food was not being tossed, nor ending up in the waste stream to decompose into environmentally toxic methane greenhouse gas.
Our neighbors experiencing food insecurity (where is my next meal coming from?) were able to enjoy a good meal.
Community members who wanted to help their neighbors were able to participate in simple, efficient, impactful work.
I thought, in a city like Austin this could be done every day. It was almost too easy.
The fulfillment I experienced led me to start doing Food Rescue on a regular basis -- first alone, then with a few friends, then with a few more.
I called the operation "Keep Austin Fed" (KAF), and it continued to grow as volunteers, donors, and recipients were all excited to join the cause.
Fast forward to 2022, and KAF has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit that rescues over 10,000 meals every week, enabling quality surplus
food from restaurants, bakeries, grocers and caterers to feed lots of neighbors in need. My experience starting KAF led me want to help others start
their own small, grassroots Food Rescue operations by sharing what I've learned -- find out more about that in The FoodRescueDude Story
I spend my days as a full-time volunteer. In addition to working on FoodRescueDude, I am a KAF Board member, and do Food Rescue volunteer work for both KAF and the local
Port Townsend (WA) Food Bank, where my activities include volunteer engagement and recruitment, community outreach, scheduling/operations, and donor management.
When not active in Food Rescue, I participate as a founding Board member and volunteer for Olympic Neighbors, a nonprofit that provides housing and
enhanced lifestyles for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, where I helped create community inclusion programs that engage the
Olympic Neighbors residents in Food Rescue. I am also a projectionist for the Port Townsend Film Festival, a bartender for the Port Townsend
International Wooden Boat Festival, and an avid reader, bicyclist, and Netflix watcher.
